Learn & Go: Acupuncture for Pets

I'm Dr. Laurie McCauley from Optimum Pet Vitality, and today, we’re diving into acupuncture—a powerful, time-tested therapy that’s been around for thousands of years. It’s one of the best ways to relieve pain, especially for arthritis, but many pet parents hesitate because of one thing: needles.

Acupuncture Needles: Nothing to Fear

If you’re picturing large, painful needles, think again! Acupuncture needles are super fine—just a little thicker than a hair. They don’t cut the skin like hypodermic needles used for injections. Instead, their pencil-like tip gently moves through the tissue, triggering the body’s natural healing response with minimal discomfort.

We also use tubes to insert the needles. The tube touches the skin first, helping the pet feel it instead of the needle. And here’s a neat trick: if you scratch or pet your pup in a different area while inserting the needle, their brain focuses on the touch rather than the needle. This makes the process even more comfortable!

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture stimulates the body to release different healing chemicals based on where the needle is placed and how long it’s left in. Some points need just 6–8 minutes, while others stay in for up to 25 minutes.

There are 365 known acupuncture points in dogs! Some are on specific energy pathways, while others—called ashi points—are just painful areas that improve when needled. (Think of it like a trigger point in humans!)

What Conditions Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture is incredible for managing arthritis pain, mobility issues, and inflammation. It’s also helpful for nerve function, digestion, and overall wellness. While it won’t replace antibiotics for infections, it’s a fantastic tool for pain relief and healing.

After treatment, used needles go into a sharps container for safe disposal. No risk of contamination—just healing for your pet!

Final Thoughts

Acupuncture is a gentle, effective therapy with thousands of research studies backing its benefits. If your pup struggles with arthritis or chronic pain, don’t be afraid to give it a try! It’s an amazing tool to help them feel better and move more comfortably.
